Sabbath Learning – No Poor Among Them

And the Lord called his people Zion, because they were of one heart and one mind, and dwelt in righteousness; and there was no poor among them. Moses 7:18.

This is a fairly straight forward scripture except for the phrase, “there was no poor among them.” This could have multiple meanings. This morning Pres. Adamson shared the thought that what the Lord may be implying is that none of his children in Zion were poor in ordinances. All of his children had received all of the saving ordinances. What a great definition of Zion.

Sabbath Learning – Media and Gaming

Today the Bishop called the young men and parents together to discuss the topic of media and gaming. I was very impressed by the Priests Quorum because they spoke before the bishop on the effects of gaming including addiction, attitude, and wasted time.

Some of the highlights from the meeting were as follows:

  • One example was of Quinn Pitcock, a professional NFL player, that lost his multimillion dollar career due to video game addiction.
  • Use media only for those things that uplift.
  • If youth give up video games now they will be much better missionaries when they serve.
  • Ask yourself does the digital activity I’m involved in enlarge my ability to live, love and flourish. If not, change the activity to one that will enlarge these three areas.

Thanks,

Curtis J. Morley

He Heard My Prayers

My last thought as I pulled back the covers and flattened myself into the mattress in hope of some respite was that I couldn’t see any other option but, the reality was that I couldn’t. I would have to call Sam and cancel the meeting the next morning. I just felt too sick. Every part of me ached and my head felt like a cannonball ready to explode with sinus pressure.

I had promised the CEO on Monday that I would have a completed book-launch-marketing-plan and budget numbers for him by Friday at the executive retreat. In my state of disrepair I couldn’t imagine a way to keep this promise. I could barely keep a coherent thought with all the pounding in my head. I didn’t see a way to keep it together long enough to complete a full marketing plan. A hot bath earlier in the day helped with the aches but the decongestant I took had little affect on the intense pain around my eyes. I usually don’t get sick but when I do it is sinus infection and it puts me out for several days. I resigned myself to the fever and sickness and let it overtake my resolve as I lay in the dark bedroom.

Then the realization that I wouldn’t be keeping my commitment started to sink in. And when I say sink, I mean SINK. The overwhelming feeling of despair was becoming more painful than the illness. I just had to get this plan done. I had to figure out the budget numbers. I had to keep the meeting tomorrow. I had to spend hours completing the details. And yet, there was no way possible to accomplish the task in my current condition. And then it struck me – I knew someone that could.

I slid back out of bed and knelt in the same position I had occupied minutes before. This time instead of a rushed conversation spoken out of duty, I said a simple yet pure prayer asking for His help to heal me and to take this overwhelming feeling from me. I knew that the only way to alleviate the pain both physically and the emotionally was with His help.

I climbed back into bed with the pounding still in my head but the pit in my stomach removed. Around 3:00 a.m. I was sweating like a piece of bacon on a hot griddle. My fever had worsened and the sweat was pouring off of me – and then – my fever broke. It felt as if the illness was draining from me, starting at the top of my head, washing down my body, out my feet and off the edge of the bed. The following hours I slept so deep and relaxed that it made up completely for the previous unrest. The next morning I felt fantastic and made it to the office on time for the meeting.

I know that Heavenly Father heard my prayer and I know that He answered it. I know that without Him I would have been sick in bed for another several days. I know that He cares for me and all of His children.

A Cool Thought on God

Fast Sunday brought some great testimonies from or ward. The spirit was strong. One brother, from Tonga described God like this. He is the Big boss, and if you love him, He’s got your back.

A Story and Testimony from Mary Elizabeth Rollins Lightner about my Grandfather Isaac Morley and the Book of Mormon.

Mary Elizabeth Rollins Lightner bore a powerful testimony of the Prophet Joseph Smith to a group of young men at Brigham Young University on April 14, 1905. Mary was born on April 9, 1818 in Lima, Livingston, New York to Keziah Keturah Van Benthuysen and John D. Rollins. According to her autobiography:

Mary Elizabeth Lightner
When I was ten years old, we moved to Kirtland, Ohio, and lived in a house belonging to Algernon Sidney Gilbert, mother’s sister’s husband. We remained there two years, when we heard of the plates of the Book of Mormon, being found by Joseph Smith. Soon the news was confirmed by the appearance of Oliver Cowdery, Peter Whitmer, and Ziba Peterson, with the glorious news of the restoration of the Gospel through the Prophet Joseph Smith. They bore a powerful testimony, by the Holy Spirit, of the truth of the great work they were engaged in; and which they were commissioned by the Father to present to all the world.

Isaac Morley

Isaac Morley

Quite a number of the residents of Kirtland accepted baptism. Mother and myself also, in the month of October, 1830. A branch of the Church was organized, and Father Morley was ordained an elder to preside over it. He owned a large farm, about a mile from Kirtland, and some three or four families went there to live, and meetings were held there. A good spirit and one of union prevailed among the brethren for some time. After Oliver Cowdery and his brethren left there for Missouri on their mission to the Lamanites, a wrong spirit crept into our midst, and a few were led away by it. About this time, John Whitmer came and brought a Book of Mormon. There was a meeting that evening, and we learned that Brother Morley had the Book in his possession the only one in that part of the country. I went to his house just before the meeting was to commence, and asked to see the book; Brother Morley put it in my hand, as I looked at it, I felt such a desire to read it, that I could not refrain from asking him to let me take it home and read it, while he attended meeting. He said it would be too late for me to take it back after meeting, and another thing, he had hardly had time to read a chapter in it himself, and but few of the brethren had even seen it, but I pled so earnestly for it, he finally said, “Child, if you will bring this book home before breakfast tomorrow morning, you may take it.” He admonished me to be very careful, and see that no harm came to it.

If any person in this world was ever perfectly happy in the possession of any coveted treasure I was when I had permission to read that wonderful book. Uncle and Aunt were Methodists, so when I got into the house, I exclaimed, “Oh, Uncle, I have got the ‘Golden Bible’.” Well, there was consternation in the house for a few moments, and I was severely reprimanded for being so presumptuous as to ask such a favor, when Brother Morley had not read it himself. However, we all took turns reading it until very late in the night as soon as it was light enough to see, I was up and learned the first verse in the book. When I reached Brother Morley’s they had been up for only a little while. When I handed him the book, he remarked, “I guess you did not read much in it.” I showed him how far we had read. He was surprised and said, “I don’t believe you can tell me one word of it.” I then repeated the first verse, also the outlines of the history of Nephi. He gazed at me in surprise, and said, “child, take this book home and finish it, I can wait.”

Before or about the time I finished the last chapter, the Prophet Joseph Smith arrived in Kirtland, and moved into a part of Newel K. Whitney’s house (Uncle Algernon’s partner in the Mercantile Business), while waiting for his goods to be put in order. Brother Whitney brought the Prophet Joseph to our house and introduced him to the older ones of the family (I was not in at the time.) In looking around he saw the Book of Mormon on the shelf, and asked how that book came to be there. He said, “I sent that book to Brother Morley.” Uncle told him how his niece had obtained it. He asked, “Where is your niece?” I was sent for; when he saw me he looked at me so earnestly, I felt almost afraid. After a moment or two he came and put his hands on my head and gave me a great blessing, the first I ever received, and made me a present of the book, and said he would give Brother Morley another. He came in time to rebuke the evil spirits, and set the church in order. We all felt that he was a man of God, for he spoke with power, and as one having authority in very deed.

Stop SOPA, Stop PIPA

Yesterday was the first-ever Internet Protest against the proposed Legislation called SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) and PIPA (Protecting Intellectual Property Act). Over 75,000 U.S. sites ” chose to Black-Out their sites in protest of a new and damaging bill. I was one of them. Yesterday if you visited this site you would have seen the following linked image and nothing else. I joined Mark Zuckerburg, Wikipedia, Google, Wired, Tech Crunch, and thousands of others that believe in keeping America free – including the internet. You can still make a difference. Click on the image below and sign the petition at Google that gets sent directly to your Congressman.

Stop SOPA, Stop PIPA

“The greatest good that comes from doing good is that your capacity for doing good increases.”

Today we are in the Laie 3rd ward.  The talks were inspiring. They all focused around change. I wish that it was appropriate to record in sacrament meeting. There were two young boys that sang “I Wonder When He Comes Again” that was very beautiful and full of the spirit. I wish I could share it with you because I know you would feel the spirit of it as well.

Sabbath Learning – Louisiana Covenant Marriage Law

1970 states started enacting No-fault divorce laws. In only five years the divorce rate across the country rose 40%. In 1997 Louisiana, in an effort to reverse the trend, created the covenant marriage law. Couples could then choose a contract marriage and covenant marriage. A covenant marriage requires that that the couple gets counseling from a religious leader or certified marriage counselor before the marriage.  It also requires that the couple exhaust every possible means to keep the marriage together should conflict arise before a divorce. In the case of divorce for a covenant marriage in Louisiana, the law actually reads, “…and subsequent to the parties obtaining counseling.” Only after having counseling can the petition for divorce be filed. The conditions for a divorce are much more stringent than a contract marriage. Only for things like adultery, abuse, felony, abandonment etc… can be the grounds of divorce. Reconcilable differences aren’t good enough with a covenant marriage. It doesn’t matter if you get bored or get sick of your spouse it is much more than that.

So what is the difference between a contract marriage and a covenant marriage. What is a contract? What is a covenant?

A contract is an agreement set up to keep two people honest and in check. One of my lawyer friends says frequently that his job is to see everything that is going to go bad and plan for the best case when it does.

A covenant is a promise between two people. Instead of planning for the relationship to dissolve a covenant is set up to promise to each other that everything will be done to keep the marriage together.

What was the impact? According to a Gallup poll the effect of the covenant marriage law passing in Louisiana:

  • 63% believe that covenant marriages will strengthen family life
  • 59% believe that covenant marriages will last longer that regular marriages
  • 58% believe that they will be better for children
The only trouble with the Louisiana law is that it only accounts for this life. What about the next life?
